Sexism

New Holiday in Saudi: Assault a Cashier?

They say King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia is the “women’s king” as he’s had some success in getting Saudi men to quit being such asses towards the women to some degree. One of his projects was to install women as cashiers in various places.

I wonder what he thinks about Abdullah Mohammad Al Dawood, a Saudi author of “self-help” books,  who has stated, that in order to protect the chasity of the women, men should sexually assault them.

A Saudi writer has urged his Twitter followers to sexually molest women hired to work as cashiers in big grocery stores, the latest backlash from conservatives who want to roll back limited social and economic reforms launched in Saudi Arabia.

His reasoning? Once upon time a particular asshat of a man did not want his wife to go to the local mosque to pray. She went anyway. So he hid behind something and when she walked by he jumped out and molested her. She went home and vowed to never leave the “safety” of her home again. And the asshat called it good.

Yep. A Man of God™ sexually assaulted a woman to keep her from going to the House of God® and this asshat says “this is a guy we should emulate”. A fucking rapist. Because he did it for God or some claptrap.

This apparently isn’t Dawood’s first time at the Shitlord Tournament. Not so long ago he declared that infant girls should be put in burqas to protect them from being sexually assaulted. Who the hell thinks like this (besides this jackass)?

What strikes me is how these kinds of men always say it’s because they don’t want Saudi to turn into The West™ . How the fuck is encouraging the sexual assault of women and blaming infants for being sexually assaulted even remotely “better” than this side of the planet?

Saudi Arabia should be referred to not as the Kingdom of Humanity, but the Kingdom of Dick because apparently as long as you have a [arab] penis you can do whatever you want and a metric fuckton of clerics will line up to blame everyone else.

Always go for the wallet

Facebook appears to be finally taking the open misogyny on it’s pages seriously. I’m way to jaded to think it’s because they actually give a damn about violence directed at women & girls. I’m pretty sure it’s all about the money as several companies have removed their ads and other were being pressured to do so.  That said, here’s the relevant part of their statement:

In recent days, it has become clear that our systems to identify and remove hate speech have failed to work as effectively as we would like, particularly around issues of gender-based hate. In some cases, content is not being removed as quickly as we want.  In other cases, content that should be removed has not been or has been evaluated using outdated criteria. We have been working over the past several months to improve our systems to respond to reports of violations, but the guidelines used by these systems have failed to capture all the content that violates our standards. We need to do better – and we will.

For now, I’m going to refrain from posting on Facebook and will either be on Google+ or Twitter until such time as Facebook can say “We have been doing better – and we will continue to do so” much more often than not because it’s not just a matter of the mods not having enough time to deal with all the sex-based hate but a matter of the mods telling people to fuck right the hell off if they don’t like it (in so many words, of course.)

Seriously. How can anyone find these images acceptable while banning images of breast reconstruction and breastfeeding? Only if one doesn’t consider women and girls to be fully human.

France ‘overwelmingly’ opposes religious freedom

France has really stepped up the religious persecution, voting 246 to 1 in favour of banning Muslim women from wearing burqas in public.  If it’s not challenged within 10 days, it becomes law and Muslim women will face fines and/or imprisonment for being caught outside their homes in burqas.

As with the denial of religious status to Islam in Italy, women’s rights are again being misused to promote religious intolerance towards Muslims:

It is aimed at ensuring gender equality, women’s dignity and security, as well as upholding France’s secular values – and its way of life.

Really? A law that demands women dress in a manner that goes against their beliefs and/or desires or be punished is about the equality, dignity and security of those women?

Laughter sound bite

I don’t know about you, but I for one wasn’t born yesterday. This law is straight up bullshit and has nothing to do with the rights of women.  This cartoon sums what’s going on with Islam in the west very well.

Parents sue over circumcision

Some parents in Florida have sued a hospital over the unwanted circumcision of their son while he was in NICU.

I hope they win and that the judgment is so huge that doctors & hospitals will cease involving themselves in the routine mutilation of little boys.

The parents of a four-year-old boy who was circumcised at a Miami hospital against their wishes are suing the facility.

According to Delgado’s attorneys, Viera’s parents told South Miamidoctors several times that they did not want him circumcised.

Though Viera had spent over a week in the NICU for birth-related complications, at one point, he was taken out of the NICU and the circumcision was performed. (via)

Frankly, I think the adults who do this should be put in jail for a very long time. I don’t care about religious/cultural traditions. No one should get to practice either on the bodies of other people, children included.

Buddhism: Not biased, just sexist

Naveen Andrews

The next Dalai Lama?

Most religious groups balk at the idea of a woman being in charge. In fact, the Catholic church recently stating that ordaining women is on par with raping children. Other Christian groups have split because a woman was allowed to do more than clean the sanctuary.

Not so with Buddhism. None other than the Dalai Lama has stated that there’s nothing in Buddhism that would preclude a woman from taking his place.

As you can probably guess from the title of this post, there’s only one hitch. While having a vagina is alright, been less than physically appealing to men is not:

“And I also mentioned in case Dalai Lama’s incarnation one female comes then must be very attractive female. So the very reason, you see more influence to others, an ugly female then may not much effective,” added Dalai Lama.

Now, if I were the Dalai Lama, I’d make it a point to come back as an ugly woman and state that the next male Dalai Lama has to be a clone of Naveen Andrews.

How to fail at calling someone out

Should you ever wish to call someone out for inappropriate behaviour, there’s a simple rule you should keep in mind when doing so.

Do not engage in the behaviour you’re calling the other person out for.

For example, if you want to call someone out on things they’ve said or written about women you should refrain from referring to women as somehow inferior to men. As strange as it may sound, once you call someone else a misogynist, it’s considered hypocrisy (at the very least) to precede to engage in misogyny yourself.

Today in God approved heterosexual sex

Via Feministing comes this hilarious video of a Christian man trying to explain how it’s okay if vaginal sex hurts cuz we womenz only exist for the sexual pleasure of the menz:

Fair warning: video includes wanton abuse of an orange with a spoon. You’d do well to avoid drinking/eating while viewing.

Click on the link to Feministing above if you’d like to see him explain how condoms won’t protect you from AIDS using (I kid you not) a glass, a strainer and some rotten dairy product.

Women of the Christian Patriarchy

Here’s a fascinating (in a disturbing way) article about the push by Christian men to turn back the clock on women’s liberation and the women who are helping them do it.

As an alternative, the movement offers a "separate but equal" division of duties and authority. Men, the embodiment of Christ, are the breadwinners and spiritual leaders in worship, decision making, finances, and sex. Women, representing the church, are encouragers, "completers," and helpmeets, bound to transform the culture by example and to sacrifice in God’s honor.

This movement’s goal is to banish women from public life:

Reaching this austere conviction via shared women’s study is a process that oddly parallels the protofeminist consciousness-raising groups of the ’60s and ’70s, in which women recognized their common complaints as part of a larger pattern of oppression. Gloria Steinem called those groups "the primary way women discover that we are not crazy, the system is." But the Titus 2 message is precisely the opposite:

The Lord’s system is righteous, ungrateful feelings are sins to be surmounted, and feminist rebellion is a cultural scourge to be eradicated. The radical leap taken by Titus 2 women is unconditional surrender—an army of Phyllis Schlaflys, fighting for their own subordination based on the promise that the meek shall inherit the Earth. "It is a revolution that will take place on our knees," writes author and Peace’s contemporary Nancy Leigh DeMoss.

It would be one thing if these women were content to live as slaves themselves, but they’re not. They want the rest of us enslaved right along with them.  And that makes it a problem.

So funny I forgot to laugh

Number 41 on pro-choice women:

For those of you who can’t watch or don’t want to watch the video here’s the rundown:

Talking head says something about lighter moments, Bill Clinton & cuts to:

Pappy Bush making a “joke” about a run in he had with a pro-choice woman whom he described as the ugliest and angriest woman he’s ever run into.  She was carrying a sign stating “stay out of my womb” and his response was to say “no problem”.

Bill Clinton follows him and whines about how he could never get away with making a sexist “joke” like that and closes the clip with another “joke” about two dogs watching kids break dance and declaring they’d be wormed if they did that.

Personally, I’m not angry with Bush as it’s rather common for conservative men to make it known that women are little more than animated fuck-dolls put on the planet to serve them.

It’s also common for them to describe women who don’t play along with this as “ugly” and “angry” bitches they’d never fuck in the first place.

But, Bill?

Here’s a a man who states he’s pro-woman and a man whose own wife and daughter have been the recipients of sexist attacks for well over a decade now.

He is also a high ranking member of  a political party who’s male members are routinely slammed in sexist terms themselves.

And all he can do is whine about how he can’t be as publicly sexist as Republican men?!?

Fuck him.

On the bright side, isn’t it great that the men have found at least one thing they can be bipartisan about in these tumultuous times?
