One of the things that disturbed me about Obama when he was running for president was that he seemed to go out of his way to dismiss the idea that there were real issues between liberals (aka: blue) and conservatives (aka: red).
Though he talked a great game, I was somewhat convinced that the first time a Republican threatened to have a tantrum, he’d cave like a stressed out parent who just wants the shrieking to stop no matter what.
Well, he does want the shrieking to stop, but he’s apparently not going to be caving in as there are now two reports that he has put his foot down with Republican would-be tantrum throwers.
The first report comes from the Wall Street Journal blog and states that when some Republicans wanted to give him grief over his stimulus package he replied with two words. “I won”.
The other is from the Telegraph and it reports that he told Republican office holders that they cannot “listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done.”
Both remarks are being painted as being extremely ideological and as a sign Obama is going to be an partisan fuckwit, but I don’t think so. I think it’s a sign that he does hold the moderate to liberal ideas that he’s spoken about and that unless given sufficient reason to change his mind (and tantrums aren’t sufficient reasons), he’s not going to be changing his mind.
In other words, he has a backbone and he’s not afraid to use it.
Bravo!
