In light of nearly 2/3rds of New Yorkers claiming Park 51 is “insensitive” and should be moved, I’d like to share this video by the Amazing Atheist:
The fact of the matter is it’s only insensitive if you think every Muslim on the planet is guilty of the murders (which included Muslims) which took place on 9/11. It’s like stating no church can go up near a school because Christians have murdered children.
It’s fucking wrong and shouldn’t be tolerated, even if *you* don’t like religion.
Watching that video makes me grateful for my dad. He once showed up at the frontdoor with a loaded rifle in one hand. Why? He didn’t want members of our mother’s insane church on the property. Living with her was bad enough. Only the stars know what would’ve happened if he’d been a religious man.
It looks like the anti-Muslim bug that’s been going around has finally made it’s way to southern Europe. Apparently, Italy is one of those countries that not only gives money to religion, but has a list of “official” religions.
Islam is not one of them and, if the bigots have their way, won’t become one of them. What bugs me is that Italian lawmakers recently voted to deny Islam official status as a religion over, amongst other things, the treatment of women by Muslim men:
Islam is not an established religion in Italy and there is only one official mosque in the country, Rome’s Grand Mosque (photo). Politicians from the ruling coalition cite radical imams, polygamy and failure to uphold women’s rightsby Muslims immigrants as obstacles to recognising Islam as an official religion in Italy (via).
This would be the same country that recognizes Catholicism as an official religion. A religion that has never upheld the rights of women. A religion that has members who do not uphold women’s rights. A religion that continues to actively works against the rights of women, not just in Italy, but throughout the entire world.
The Catholic church has opposed (and continues to oppose) the use of condoms in AIDS stricken areas of Africa (women constitute the majority of new infections). It has kicked out a mother for her support of her 9 year old daughter getting an abortion and defended it.
It also opposes birth control and abortion. Women are also officially banned from holding office in the church and any Catholic man who goes against this will be kicked out.
How do you say “Y’all are all a bunch of bloody fucking hypocrites!” in Italian?
Most religious groups balk at the idea of a woman being in charge. In fact, the Catholic church recently stating that ordaining women is on par with raping children. Other Christian groups have split because a woman was allowed to do more than clean the sanctuary. Not so with Buddhism. None other than the Dalai [...]

A few weeks or so ago a British man managed to get the Church of England to officially recognize that he was no longer a member. As a result of the publicity somewhere around 100 thousand Brits have downloaded the form requesting the church quit counting them as members. As you’ve probably guessed from the [...]
Here’s something for the ‘can’t make this crap up’ file via CNN: For nearly 30 years, Redding has been an ordained minister in the Episcopal Church. Her priesthood ended Wednesday when she was defrocked. The reason? For the past three years Redding has been both a practicing Christian and a Muslim. Redding apparently believes there’s [...]
From Cath Elliot’s article about how religion makes life a living hell for women: To the men of religion, women’s lives simply do not matter: "respect for life" never ever means "respect for a woman’s life." And they show it every chance they get. From disowning the mother of a child rape victim to getting [...]
If only atheists would just convert to Christianity or at least sit down and shut up about being atheists then we’d all prance gayly into a bright future of unicorns, rainbows, and butterflies. Won’t that be just grand? — Austin Cline
