How to fail at calling someone out

by Karen on May 1, 2009

Should you ever wish to call someone out for inappropriate behaviour, there’s a simple rule you should keep in mind when doing so.

Do not engage in the behaviour you’re calling the other person out for.

For example, if you want to call someone out on things they’ve said or written about women you should refrain from referring to women as somehow inferior to men. As strange as it may sound, once you call someone else a misogynist, it’s considered hypocrisy (at the very least) to precede to engage in misogyny yourself.

The patriarchy made flesh

by Karen on March 27, 2009

From Cath Elliot’s article about how religion makes life a living hell for women:

To the men of religion, women’s lives simply do not matter: "respect for life" never ever means "respect for a woman’s life."

And they show it every chance they get. From disowning the mother of a child rape victim to getting upset when mothers are not shunned by society.  Women, unless we fit some extremely narrow male defined definition of women, simply do not matter.

McCain’s mockery of women’s health

by Karen on October 17, 2008

This may sound bad, but I skipped the debate between Obama and McCain Wednesday.  I tried to watch it, but McCain annoys the crap out of me and nothing short of a lobotomy could possibly get me to vote for him.  So, what did I miss?  I missed getting to see McCain do this (via Shakesville):

Photo of John McCain

This is what McCain did when he spoke about late term abortions.  He made scare quotes about health exceptions to laws restricting abortion access (video here).

His exact words:

Again…just again, an example of the eloquence of Senator Obama, health of the mother. You know that’s been stretched by the pro-abortion movement to mean almost anything.

He wasn’t finished either.  He went on to state that considering the health of women is an extremist position.

Got that?  If you think a pregnant woman’s health is something to take into consideration when drafting laws restricting abortion access, you’re now an official member of the Extreme Lefty Brigade.

Believe it or not, it gets worse.  Via Cara at the Curvature, here’s another video of John McCain talking about abortion (second video down) where he continues to support outlawing abortion, both federally and locally, even though he understands that doing so would lead to the deaths of women.

Personally, I do not like how Obama chooses to speak about reproductive issues, but I think, at heart, he actually gives a damn about women, unlike McCain who is the true extremist on this issue if only for political reasons.

In case you thought women were human

April 28, 2008

The state of Oklahoma would like to inform you that you are wrong. Under the guise of obtaining informed patient consent, this new law requires doctors to withhold pregnancy termination until an ultrasound is performed. The law states that either an abdominal or vaginal ultrasound, whichever gives the best image of the fetus, must be [...]

Keith Olbermann – worst person in the world

April 24, 2008

Last night Keith Olbermann and Howard Fineman decided to get together for a chit chat about Hillary Clinton. As you may know she hasn’t dropped out of the race and certain people are none to happy about it. In fact the recent tone of things can be best summed up as “how do we get [...]

How much is your daughter worth?

April 7, 2008

I bet you’re thinking “priceless”. Well, you’d be wrong. Just ask the parents of Tressa Gross. You see, Tressa went to a club back in April of 2002 where she met a man by the name of John Berger. He raped her and killed her with a fatal dose of GHB. He admitted that he [...]
