Upset by the ad campaign by the American Humanist Association, a Christian woman has decided to start her own campaign. Here’s her idea (via Friendly Atheist):

I am gobsmacked by the inanity of this sign. Where’s the hellfire? Brimstone? Why can’t I smell rotten eggs? Why is there no stench of burning flesh in the air? Why do I have the sudden urge to hand this god a box of Kleenex, some ice cream and a Titanic DVD?

To attribute the words on this sign to the Christian god is almost laughable when the bible tells the tale of a god best described by Richard Dawkins as:

“…the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”

This god whining about how we shouldn’t leave him all alone because he loves us? I think Yahweh would cut his own tongue out before he said something like this.

If god protects us from evil – why did god create evil?

One of the selling points for Christianity is that god protects his followers from the evils that allegedly plague the planet. He watches over them like a vigilant father ready to do battle to protect his children. There’s only one problem.

Christianity states that their god made all things thus God/Daddy created evil and all things that are considered “evil” such as the devil.

This point was recently brought home by The Littlest Atheist over on Freethunk.

The series focuses on a atheistic child and one of the latest issues has him bugging out about his closet being left open at night. Trying to calm him his mother (a theist of some sort) tells him God will protect him.

Bertrand shoots back “Doubtful. Isn’t God the one who created the monster in the closet?”

His mother just walks out the door, because well….God can’t be both a protector from evil and the creator of evil without some serious character flaws.

There is no God

Why is this such a bad thing to say? It seems to me that this is just another way in which theists are protected from reality. There is no evidence for the existence of such a creature.

Yes, the universe exists and yes, life exists and yes, we do not know the exact mechanisms that caused these two things.

But, so what? That doesn’t mean that there might be a super intelligent, if somewhat insane and sadistic, alien out there that did either.

Why in hell should any of us have to tip toe around their baseless assertion that such a creature exists to begin with?

It’s like they’re children and we want to avoid a tantrum. It’s not that we doubt ourselves. It’s that we don’t believe them. What’s the problem in bluntly rejecting their story?

Besides, they’re not children. They’re grown adults and many of these grown adults rake in millions, if not more, peddling the absurd idea of a creator alien that’s personally concerned with the trials and tribulations of a bunch of hairless apes on a pale blue dot.

Maybe it’s time we quit coddling them and let them have as big of a tantrum as they want.

Did you see the “debate” between Daniel Dennett and Dinesh D’Souza? Do you, like me, consider Dinesh to be an intellectual piss ant who ought to be arrested for crimes against logic in addition to being an asshole in public? Willing to say/write that in public?

Well, pal – congratulations. You hate God.

One reason I think is that they are God-haters. Atheists often like to portray themselves as “unbelievers” but this is not strictly accurate. If they were mere unbelievers they would simply live their lives as if God did not exist. I don’t believe in unicorns, but then I haven’t written any books called The End of Unicorns, Unicorns are Not Great, or The Unicorn Delusion. Clearly the atheists go beyond disbelief; they are on the warpath against God. And you can hear their bitterness not only in their book titles but also in their mean-spirited invective.

And just think, there are people out there who will insist that this man knows what he’s talking about. They must be pretty damned ignorant, don’t you think?
