George Bush is set to give his speech since leaving office and it’s pretty much par for the course with him. The media is banned and he’s sticking to safe territory.
What is amusing is that he will not be giving this speech in America. His first post-presidential speech is going to take place in Canada. Calgary to be exact (via Raw Story)
His Mar. 17 speech, to be given before the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, a pro-business group, is expected to draw a private audience of 1,500.
A University of Calgary political science professor told Canadian television: “I think he’s probably nervous about how he’ll be received, and so Calgary’s a safe place.” He noted that the city is pro-American and more conservative than some other Canadian metropolises.
And yet, he said, “There is a lot of anger and there is a sense it was a failed presidency.”
“It’s our understanding it’s one of the first — if not the first — times he’ll speak since leaving office,” the vice-president of public and government affairs at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Geoff Pradella,1 told the network. “I imagine it’ll be a reflection on issues that arose during his time in office, and maybe drawing from that his perspectives on the way forward.”
The man’s pretty much the face for Republicanism so I doubt anyone from the party wants him around as they do their best to once again convince people that “fuck you” is a good way to run a country. I think that has more than anything to do with him heading to the Great White North for his first speech.
And what better way to celebrate than to look back on some of the greatest moments in presidential speeches:
A part of me understands that a lot of the above has more than a little to do with class warfare, but damnit all, despite my disagreement with our soon to be president Barack Obama, I’m so looking forward to Tuesday when we finally get rid of this nasty thug.
This morning, the Rude Pundit decided to honor the efforts of Muntader al-Zaidi, the Iraqi shoe-tosser, by taking out a raggedy old pair of sneakers, putting them in a Priority Mail shipping box, helpfully provided by the United States Post Office, and shipping them to President George W. Bush at the White House. He included a note that read, “This is a farewell kiss from the American people, you dog.”
Since throwing objects at the president is generally considered a crime, the Rude Pundit figures sending shoes to Bush is a small, good thing, a gesture of contempt that has context. Sweet Christ, at this point, there should be giant sacks of shoes heading to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC, 20500, like letters to Santa.
It’s still in the 30s here so I am not going outside unless I utterly have to, but tomorrow it’s supposed to be north of 60 & near 80 by the end of the week. I will be sending a pair of my shoes sometime between now and Friday. How about you?
ETA: If you have a lot of flip flops as I do, they are perfect for putting in the flat rate Priority envelopes which cost $4.80 to send. They have flat rate boxes ($9.80) in multiple sizes, the smallest of which just happens to be advertised by the USPS as being perfect for sending shoes.
George Bush recently gave an interview where he talked about his religious views. Unsurprisingly, he’s like many American Christians, he’s never actually thought about them much, if, at all. What I found interesting was his response to questioning about his alcoholism. The common belief about that is he found Jesus via Billy Graham and quit [...]
Now that our time under Bush is almost over the guys at the Wall Street Journal have decided to re-write history and George Bush’s place in it. His place according to the WSJ in an opinion piece published earlier this month? He’s to be an unsung American hero who has been treated most cruelly by [...]
Come what may on January 20, 2008 George Bush will no longer be president of the United States and will need to find other ways to occupy his time since he will no longer be capable of bombing the countries of Muslims in order to prove his manliness. He could follow the path of Clinton, [...]
Remember those words spoken by VP Dick Cheney? Keep them in mind as you watch the following video about the growing epidemic of Iraqi girls and women setting themselves on fire to avoid abuse. Embedded video from CNN Video
Did you sit through Bush’s speech? Did you get an the feeling that you’d heard that speech before? You weren’t the only one. Jon Stewart had that same exact feeling:
Well, isn’t this just great. The US Army is going to deploy an active duty unit within the US for one year beginning in October. The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle, helping restore essential services and escorting supply [...]
