Gay Rights

Did you see this one coming?

by Karen on December 9, 2008

Newsweek recently ran an article about the religious case for marriage equality.  The professional Christian set is, shall we say, not happy?

Leading social conservatives blasted Newsweek for its current cover story, “The Religious Case for Gay Marriage,” which they said misinterprets both biblical scripture and their own political movement.

“It doesn’t surprise me. Newsweek has been so far in the tank on the homosexual issue, for so long, they need scuba gear and breathing apparatus,” said Richard Land, who heads the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. “I don’t think it’s going to change the minds of anyone who takes biblical teachings seriously.”

Tony Perkins, president of the socially conservative Family Research Council, agreed, calling Newsweek’s cover story “yet another attack on orthodox Christianity.”

What Newsweek ought to have done is print an article about the religious case for executing “anyone who takes biblical teachings seriously” yet continues to eat shellfish.

Vatican supports executions of gay people

by Karen on December 7, 2008

It has, afterall, decided it will oppose a UN resolution calling for the decriminalisation of homosexuality which is punishable by death in several countries.

Gay rights groups and newspaper editorials on Tuesday condemned the Vatican for its decision to oppose a proposed U.N. resolution calling on governments worldwide to de-criminalise homosexuality.

The row erupted after the Vatican’s permanent observer to the United Nations told a French Catholic news agency the Holy See would oppose the resolution, which France is due to propose later this month on behalf of the 27-member European Union.

Archbishop Celestino Migliore said the Vatican opposed the resolution because it would “add new categories of those protected from discrimination” and could lead to reverse discrimination against traditional heterosexual marriage.

“If adopted, they would create new and implacable discriminations,” Migliore said. “For example, states which do not recognise same-sex unions as ‘matrimony’ will be pilloried and made an object of pressure,” Migliore said.

In my opinion, only one question remains. How immoral does an organisation have to get before it is denied it’s claim to being a moral authority the rest of us should listen to?

Is it right to call gay the new black?

by Karen on December 7, 2008

Just thought I’d share this discussion about members of the gay community adopting the slogan “Gay is the new Black”.

Personally, I think the slogan goes a bit too far and “disappears” black members of the LBGT community.

Anti-Mormon? Religious Hate Crime? My Ass!

December 4, 2008

Not long after the passage of Prop 8 I wrote this post about boycotting pro Prop 8 businesses. Since then I’ve been accused of being anti-Mormon and told that my support for such boycotts is, in effect, a hate crime. Bullshit. Mormon owned businesses that supported Prop 8 are not being boycotted because they believe [...]

More time to focus on their own damned families

November 18, 2008

Alright folks, break out your violins. James Dobson just fired 202 of his bigoted employees. This is just weeks after the passage of Prop 8, which Focus on the Bigotry put $600K into. Focus on the Family announced this afternoon that 202 jobs will be cut companywide — an estimated 20 percent of its workforce. [...]

Olbermann on the passage of Prop 8

November 11, 2008

While I do not like Keith Olbermann, his recent special comment on the passage of prop 8 in California is excellent, to the point and, dare I say it, a throwback to before the primaries when Olbermann actually seemed to give a damn about something beyond his own reflection.

Religious leaders upset over Prop 8 Protests

November 8, 2008

Just days after succeeding at removing the civil rights of gay people, the Mormon church has issued a statement calling for “mutual respect” and declaring that “no one on either side of the question should be vilified, harassed or subject to erroneous information”. This from the group that donated $20 million of a total of [...]

Boycott the Mormons

November 7, 2008

While much ado is being made about the overwhelming support of prop 8 by black voters in California, there is little ado being made about getting even with the Mormons (aka: that huge group of white people who donated $20 million to passing Prop 8 ) for seeing to it that gay Californians lost their [...]

Imagine being told "no" because you’re a Christian

April 15, 2008

A photographer was recently found guilty of discrimination in New Mexico for refusing to photograph the wedding of a lesbian couple because of the “message” it sent. It should come as no surprise that the photographer in question is a Christian who thinks homosexuality is a “sin”. The professional Christian Martyr set is a bit [...]

Why you should always keep it simple

January 24, 2008

Al Gore has come out in support of marriage equality and has uploaded a video about it which you can view here. Most of his statement was fine, but then he had to go and explain that disallowing gay people to enjoy the same rights and privileges as straight people was the same as promoting [...]
