The bishop of Augsburg had a special message to share with his flock this past Sunday. It was atheists who were behind the killing machine known to the world as Nazi Germany.

From Spiegel Online:

A Catholic German bishop has come under fire for his remarks condemning atheists. In a sermon given on Easter Sunday, the bishop of Augsburg, Walter Mixa, warned of rising atheism in Germany. “Wherever God is denied or fought against, there people and their dignity will soon be denied and held in disregard,” he said in the sermon. He also said that “a society without God is hell on earth” and quoted the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky: “If God does not exist, everything is permitted.”

Most controversially, he linked the Nazi and Communist crimes to atheism. “In the last century, the godless regimes of Nazism and Communism, with their penal camps, their secret police and their mass murder, proved in a terrible way the inhumanity of atheism in practice.” Christians and the Church were always the subject of “special persecution” under these systems, he said.

This isn’t the first time the bishop has caused a ruckus. He’s went after the Jews (ironic, yes?) by comparing what Nazi Germany did to them to abortion and Palestine. He also appears to like calling anyone who criticizes him Nazis.

The Vatican has decided to backtrack on it’s approval of the behaviour of a Brazilian archbishop who really shined his ass in the case of a nine year old rape victim receiving an abortion.

Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, said the excommunication not only of the medical team but also of the girl’s mother had been a mistake. “Before thinking about an excommunication it was necessary and urgent to save an innocent life”, he said. The excommunication had been decided on and publicised “too hastily”. (source)

They’ve been in spin mode for the last week with the head of the Brazilian branch of bishops stating that there was “no clear case” for excommunicating the doctors who carried out the abortion because only doctors who “systematically” conduct abortions should be excommunicated.

This is like saying “killing a fly will get your membership revoked” then backtracking and saying, after someone kills a single fly, “but only if you’re a serial killer of flies” even though killing a fly for any reason is still grounds for having your membership revoked.

The Vatican has decided to weigh in on the excommunication of the child rape victim’s mother and doctors in Brazil:

A senior Vatican cleric has defended the excommunication of the mother and doctors of a nine-year-old girl who had an abortion in Brazil after being raped.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, head of the Catholic church’s Congregation for Bishops, told the daily La Stampa on Saturday that the twins the girl had been carrying had a right to live.

"It is a sad case but the real problem is that the twins conceived were two innocent persons, who had the right to live and could not be eliminated," he said.

And as usual, being angry at a group that is so misogynistic it would force a nine year old child to carry a pregnancy to term if the state didn’t interfere is “unjustified”:

Re, who also heads the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, added: "Life must always be protected, the attack on the Brazilian church is unjustified."

Unless the life in need of protection is indisputably female, then it is unworthy of protection.

The girl’s rapist, said to be her stepfather who’s currently in jail, will not be expelled:

He also said the accused stepfather would not be expelled from the church. Although the man allegedly committed "a heinous crime … the abortion – the elimination of an innocent life – was more serious".

It frakking boggles the mind that trying to save a child’s life due to a crime committed against the child by an adult is “more serious” than the “heinous crime” of raping a child.

The Catholic church is still shining it’s ass about the nine year old rape victim’s abortion which a lawyer for the church recently referred to as murder. They’ve now stated that they’ve excommunicated the girl’s mother and others over it:

A Brazilian archbishop says all those who helped a child rape victim secure an abortion are to be excommunicated from the Catholic Church. The girl, aged nine, who lives in the north-eastern state of Pernambuco, became pregnant with twins.

It is alleged that she had been sexually assaulted over a number of years by her stepfather. The excommunication applies to the child’s mother and the doctors involved in the procedure.

And some people wonder why it’s so easy to hate the Catholic church. This is why. It is fucked in the head when it comes to issues related to sex and will always fall on the side of insanity on this issue.

I missed this when it first came out, but a top official at the Vatican had this to say about President Obama getting rid of the global gag rule:

The same day, the secular Milan daily Corriere della Sera published an interview with a top Vatican official lashing out at the new U.S. President. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, head of the Pontifical Academy for Life, told the newspaper that the repeal of the abortion-funding ban was done with “the arrogance of those who, having power, think they can decide between life and death.”

This would be the same Vatican which not only opposes the use of condoms in African countries such as Kenya, which is plagued with high rates of HIV infections, but has bluntly lied about the effectiveness of condoms in combating HIV in it’s irrational attempts to stop people from using contraception.

The “arrogance of those who, having power, think they can decide between life and death”? Perhaps someone placed a mirror in front of the archbishop, eh?

Looks like Lourdes is running out of magic despite relaxed rules on what is and is not magic.

When Bishop Jacques Perrier said the Roman Catholic Church would ease some criteria for miracles, skeptics foresaw a wave of pious believers claiming they had been healed at the famous shrine in his diocese of Lourdes.

New categories were needed, Perrier argued, because medical progress in recent decades had made it all but impossible to meet the strict scientific criteria for certifying miracles at the pilgrimage site in southwestern France.

It’s been two years now and guess how many magical cures there have been? If you guessed ‘none’, here’s your cookie.

Of course, changing the rules in hopes of, at the least, stopping the decline of miraculous recoveries connected to Lourdes has nothing to do with trying to stop the decline of miraculous recoveries connected to Lourdes.

Apparently that’s not selling down there too well, because the bishop appears to have a new spin. It’s no longer the trueness of the magic that matters, it’s the experience of seeing the magic or some such poppycock that really matters.

Perrier has just published a book in which he recounts how the shrine developed in a polemical climate as science was aggressively challenging the Church and its teachings.

“In the 19th century, the healings at Lourdes were able — and maybe that was their mission — to show medical science it still had a long way to go, and that human reality was much more complex than some simplistic explanations,” he wrote.

The new criteria shift the focus from scientific inquiry — can doctors explain it or not? — to a religious appreciation of the spiritual experience linked to an improbable healing.

“The legitimacy of Lourdes doesn’t need miracles,” he wrote. “Certified miracles are now very rare, but the number of pilgrims visiting Lourdes keeps on rising.”

A wise man once said a sucker is born every minute. Apparenly Lourdes is on every suckers list of places to be fleeced at.

Can someone tell me why it’s news that the Catholic church is still a bigoted institution? For example, a day or so after California declared that it was unconstitutional to ban homosexuals from legally marrying, it was considered “news” when Pope Ratface declared that the Catholic church still considers homosexuality to be icky.

And today the Telegraph has decided that it’s “news” that the Catholic church still considers women to be less than men. A total shocker, eh? Bet you never saw that one coming at all!

So, in keeping with the spirit of reporting news that really isn’t news, here’s some other “news” for you:

Yes, you read that right. The pope has essentially refused to enact any policies that will, at the very least, make the Catholic church less friendly to sex predators. Instead he’s chosen to state that Catholics need to pray for deliverance from the rapists in their midst. They’re also to pray that their god will show “mercy” to the victims of those rapists.

The pope asked Roman Catholics to pray for the “mercy of God for the victims of the grave situations caused by the moral and sexual conduct” of clergy members in daily prayers of penance and purification, The Times of London said Monday.

Church leaders at the Vatican said each parish or diocese shall designate a person or group to conduct daily and continuous prayer services to cleanse the church of the scandal.

I’m no fan of the Catholic church, but this is a new low even for the Pope. He’s the goddamned leader of the church and claims to be a leader for all of humanity and he can’t bring himself to fire fucking rapists? It boggles the mind. Why do people keep looking up to this man? He’s such a flaming hypocrite it’s almost impossible to look at him without going blind from the brightness of the flames.
