The newest issue of the Carnival of the Godless is up at Tangled in Blue Guy and features my post Speak now, speak loudly and speak often.

It also includes a post by Kelly of the RSS about the divisiveness and dogmaticism within the godless community lately that you should really read.

An excerpt:

This might be news to you, so I’ll try to take you through it easily. Atheism means one thing-not having a belief in a god. That’s it. It doesn’t mean that for the rest of my life I can only wear a certain type of clothing, can never swear, can’t be overtly sexual or too attractive, can’t have fun, can’t drink, and can only read/watch/listen that which has been deemed appropriate by the Council for the Protection of the Public-Image of All Atheists Everywhere. That is called religion!

It is absolutely bewildering that so many have freed themselves of the shackles of religion only to put on new ones. Forgive my candor, but I’ve seen some atheists lately who appear to have a stick shoved so far up their asses that it is interfering with their neuronal circuitry. Listen guys-you’ll be a lot more comfortable if you just yank it out, plus you’ll have the added benefit of being able to sit comfortably. Eventually, you’ll even be able to maneuver your neck enough so as not to be looking down your nose at everybody else.

Seriously, though, this is a problem. The number one reason why atheists have not become a force with which to be reckoned is because we’re all too busy fighting with each other over inane nonsense-instead of uniting and actually accomplishing something. Division in the atheist community is nothing new. Most of the major atheist organizations have at least one thorn in their side, if not more, and if we break it down to individuals, it turns into a bona fide mudslinging competition worthy of a sorority house during rush week.

This “more atheistic than thou” mentality that seems to be gaining steam within the atheosphere and beyond is a problem. I’ve seen arguments about how you can’t be a real atheist unless you’ve read some holy book in it’s original language. I’ve been made aware that I’m not a real atheist because I didn’t spend decades wandering if there really was a sex obsessed magic man in the sky. We’ve got a problem and we need to fix it before it gets out of hand.

Call to Arms: Creeping Theocracy Alert:

Vjack of Atheist Revolution has a post up about a new bill that theocratic Christians are trying to sneak by everyone that you really need to take action on. They’re trying to pass a bill that is packed full of lies and distortions in an attempt to rewrite American history to fit the "Christian Nation" myth. From Talk to Action:

This resolution, which purports to promote "education on America’s history of religious faith," is packed with the same American history lies found on the Christian nationalist websites, and in the books of pseudo-historians like David Barton. It lists a total of seventy-five "Whereas’s," leading up to four resolves, the third of which is particularly disturbing — that the U.S. House of Representatives "rejects, in the strongest possible terms, any effort to remove, obscure, or purposely omit such history from our Nation’s public buildings and educational resources," a travesty of the highest magnitude, considering that most of the "history" this resolve aims to promote in our public buildings and schools IS NOT REAL!

Sponsored by Rep. J. Randy Forbes of Virginia it has 31 cosponsors as of today. If you’re an American it’s especially important to let your representatives know that you know what they or their cohorts are up too and you don’t like it one bit.

Bill Maher tells it like it is:

Bill Maher recently appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien where he talked about Republicans and religion. Here’s the clip:

Funny Church Sign:

I went and forgot where I found it, but here’s a photo of marquee in front of a church somewhere up north I suppose:

This week I have the privilege of hosting The Humanist Symposium. I would’ve liked to have done something creative, but that just isn’t me. So, let’s get this started.

First up is Eric Johnson of The Primate Diaries with his excellent article, The Sacrifice of Admetus, which is about altruism and how recent studies point toward it not only NOT being a mark against evolution, but something that we share with other animals, including the much maligned rat. I guess that leaves us with opposable thumbs and Shakespeare, eh?

Eric also submitted another article, The Rise of Forbidden Love, that seeks to explain the double standard that surrounds sexuality in certain cultures, especially those dominated by Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Judaism where women are often singled out for severe punishment, even execution, for unauthorized sexual relations.

Next up is Evanescent of the same with a introspective article titled My Atheism where he explains what atheism means to him as well as his other beliefs and ideas.

Austin Cline of About Atheism brings us a write up on Albert Ellis a humanist therapist who recently died from natural causes and is alleged to have said that ‘neurosis’ was “just a high-class word for whining’.

Marguerite of La Marguerite shares her thoughts about her adherence to environmentalism in My Faith in Al.

Louise of The Human Print reminds us that before we ‘abuse, criticize and accuse’ one another we ought to try to walk a mile in each other shoes. The fact of the matter is that while we may all be atheists, our paths have been and continue to be different and lately it seems we’ve forgotten that.

On that same vein is Richard of Philosophy, et cetera with his article New Atheism is a Positive View where he contributes the latest dustup between non-believers to be a misunderstanding of the rhetoric involved.

The next entry about religious rights vs. human rights by Arnab of Only Three Notes just makes me sad and a bit angry. Two children are dead and for what? Will the day ever come when the commonly heard phrase “your rights end where my nose begins” is understood to include the noses of children also?

On a much lighter note, C.L Hanson of Letters from a broad wonders about marriages between atheists and theists and confesses to being glad she isn’t in one which is something I can cop to also. I’m hard enough to live with as it is. If my husband was to go theistic, it’d probably be pistols at dawn by the end of the day.

Brian of Primordial Blog offers up an excellent article on grieving which includes the tale of Tithonus as well as a poem about the cruelty that is immortality.

John of Hell’s Handmaiden reminds us all that the more theists speak the more they repeat themselves in this oldie but goodie Atheists are bad, bad people…..man. And they wonder why we don’t have any “new” arguments, eh?

Coincidently, Alvaro of Sharp Brain submitted a post about lifestyle options to help us keep our brains in shape.

Last but not least is Looking Up by The Ridger of The Greenbelt who takes apart and improves on a cute – if you’re a theist church billboard.

UPDATE: I just realized a couple of entries ran afoul of my spam filter and ended up in the junk folder. The first one is by Tobe38 of A Load of Bright with a wonderful entry about how religion is like tobacco – sure to give you a reason to pause. The other is by John of Evolutionary Middleman seems to somewhat go hand in hand with Tobe’s article as John explains while he can understand others needing it, the metaphysical is not his cup of tea.

That’s all for this week. The next edition will be at Elliptica on September 23rd. In the meantime, check out the guidelines for submitting an article, submit an article and/or volunteer to host an edition yourself by contacting Adam at ebonmusings@gmail.com.

Just a quick post to let you know that the Humanist Symposium, started by Adam of Daylight Atheism, will be hosted here September 2, 2007. Submissions can be made through the submission form on Blog Carnival or by sending a link to Adam at ebonmusings@gmail.com or a link directly to me at kcrene@gmail.com

The Guidelines:

1. The Humanist Symposium is open to atheists, agnostics, and freethinkers. Posts supporting or defending traditional, mainstream religions are ineligible. Posts written from the standpoint of a theistic but non-organized belief system (e.g., deism) are eligible at the host’s discretion, but should still follow the guidelines explained below for what type of entries we’re looking for.

2. The Humanist Symposium is not intended to be a forum for all types of atheistic thought, but original posts that specifically support the philosophy of humanism. Humanism is a way of thought that affirms the inherent dignity and worth of human life and our ability to seek truth, gain wisdom, and tell right from wrong through the application of reason. Submissions should touch on one or more of the following categories, or on topics similar to them:

The happiness and freedom of life as an atheist, or other positive aspects to living a life without religious belief

Efforts to evangelize for atheism, and stories of people who have recently deconverted from religion

How to find meaning and purpose in a godless life

How non-religious people deal with weddings, child-raising, deaths, and other significant life events

Posts that stir up the human sense of awe and wonder

The ethics and moral philosophy of the non-religious

How nonbelievers can foster and nourish a sense of community

In short, the purpose of the Humanist Symposium is not primarily to criticize religious beliefs or debunk the latest superstition, but to offer and discuss a positive alternative to belief systems based on the supernatural. If in doubt whether a post qualifies, submit it! You have nothing to lose by doing so.

3. There is no hard limit on the number of posts that should appear in each edition. The host is free to use their own discretion in deciding whether to accept a given submission.

4. You may submit one of your own posts or a post written by someone else.

5. No more than one post from the same author should appear in each edition. If there are multiple entries by the same author, the host may select any one of their choice. However, if one submission from a given site is by the author and one is by someone else, priority should be given to the author’s selection. In the case of a group blog, one entry per author is allowable, not just one entry per site.

6. Entries for a given edition should have been written recently, ideally since the last edition. Allowances may be made for particularly excellent older posts.

7. Entries should ideally be from a blog, i.e., a chronologically organized website that allows real-time user comments. However, occasional allowances may be made for humanist writing from other sources.
