Christianity’s latest (absurd) whine

A few weeks or so ago a British man managed to get the Church of England to officially recognize that he was no longer a member. As a result of the publicity somewhere around 100 thousand Brits have downloaded the form requesting the church quit counting them as members.

As you’ve probably guessed from the title of this post, there’s at least one Christian whose got a problem with this.  According to Thomas A. Flynn, requesting that a group quit counting you as a member is an attack upon that group.

The National Secular Society in England has launched an initiative to request a certificate of de-baptism. So far they say that 100,000 Brits have downloaded the document from the Internet, disgusted by the idea of being called a Christian. Some are calling baptism “a form of child abuse”, as if the gift of faith we equivalent to the atrocious situations of violence in the home that we all know so well.

This is just the latest attack by atheistic groups around the globe. Pro-atheism advertisements have been draped on buses in several countries with phrases like “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.” These, alongside the extensive array of anti-God best-sellers by authors like Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and Christopher Hitchens, announce that atheism is on the march.

All these Brits are doing is requesting that a group they do not consider themselves a part of quit counting them as members. Nothing more, nothing less. How is that an attack by atheists?

It’s only an attack if you think that anything but absolute silence is an act of persecution. Christians may not be as violent as Muslims, but they are far from the democracy supporting freedom loving sweethearts they insist they are.

There’s a bullet with your name on it

Answer’s in Genesis is “an an apologetics ministry, dedicated to enabling Christians to defend their faith and to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ effectively.”

It’s also the source of the following video depicting a white kid aiming a loaded gun at the camera while some man states that “if you don’t matter to God, you don’t matter to anyone”:

The message, of course, is “if it weren’t for my firm belief in the existence of Hell, I’d shoot your ass”, which is a rather common brand of fuckwittery amongst Christian apologists and extremists.

German Bishop blames atheists for Nazism

The bishop of Augsburg had a special message to share with his flock this past Sunday. It was atheists who were behind the killing machine known to the world as Nazi Germany.

From Spiegel Online:

Bishop Walter Mixa: A Catholic German bishop has come under fire for his remarks condemning atheists. In a sermon given on Easter Sunday, the bishop of Augsburg, Walter Mixa, warned of rising atheism in Germany. “Wherever God is denied or fought against, there people and their dignity will soon be denied and held in disregard,” he said in the sermon. He also said that “a society without God is hell on earth” and quoted the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky: “If God does not exist, everything is permitted.”

Most controversially, he linked the Nazi and Communist crimes to atheism. “In the last century, the godless regimes of Nazism and Communism, with their penal camps, their secret police and their mass murder, proved in a terrible way the inhumanity of atheism in practice.” Christians and the Church were always the subject of “special persecution” under these systems, he said.

This isn’t the first time the bishop has caused a ruckus. He’s went after the Jews (ironic, yes?) by comparing what Nazi Germany did to them to abortion and Palestine. He also appears to like calling anyone who criticizes him Nazis.

E-Harmony: Atheists are Cheaters

According to an E-Harmony advice piece, these are the people most likely to cheat on their significant others:

Those who crave excitement

Those who are not religious

Those who have a history of divorce, sexual abuse or such psychological problems as depression or bipolar disorder.

I bore pretty easily and happen to be an atheist on my second marriage with a history of abuse dating back to early childhood.  Yet, I’ve somehow managed to never cheat on any of my partners over the years.

I have, however, about laughed myself silly at a man who swore his pastor had given him permission to cheat on his wife after I dropped his ass upon discovering he was married.

Dole staffer explains Godless ad

Back in October of last year then senator of North Carolina Elizabeth Dole was behind in the polls and did what any Republican politician would do in her spot.  She went on the attack.

Her method of attack was to ‘expose’ the fact that she had caught her challenger Kay Hagan not just associating with atheists, but taking money from atheists.  After a press release failed to garner much, if any, attention, she and her crew decided to release what’s become known as the Godless ad (viewable here).

Obama’s talk is good, but his walk is crooked

Much ado was made about President Obama’s mentioning of non-believers in his inaugural speech, but now that the rubber has hit the road, Obama has decided to accept the title of Honorary President of the Boy Scouts:

Obama was meeting with a delegation of the Boy Scouts in the Oval Office on Tuesday afternoon, at which time he was to accept the group’s 2008 Report to the Nation.

A Boy Scouts spokesman said Obama has indicated he will accept the title of honorary president.

“We believe one of our greatest strengths as a nation is that we can disagree on a number of issues while agreeing to support the common good,” Deron Smith, a spokesman for BSA, told FOXNews.com.

“We’re a voluntary, private organization for families that share our values,” he added. “While many may disagree with our policies, there’s no question that we’re part of the common good and have been for 100 years.”

And one of those values is continued discrimination against non-believers and gay people.  I’m not surprised, but I am sick of the hypocrisy when it comes to dealing with bigotry against atheists and gay people.

Lock up your Mastercard, the atheists are coming!

say_what_dog We atheists get accused of a lot of things. Usually it’s just the same tripe repeated over and over again ad nauseum.  Every now and then though a religious group has an original thought.  It’s a stupid thought, but it is original.

The religious group this time is the Free Market Foundation here in Texas. According to the Texas Freedom Network, this group sent out an email with the subject of “Atheists Attack in Texas” listing things we atheists here in Texas are allegedly doing.  Somewhere in it was this accusation of sorts:

Another big issue is taxes. We’re all tired of our property taxes being raised each year without being allowed to vote on this issue. We are working hard to support legislation to cap raising appraisal taxes more than 5% unless approved by local citizens. These tax increases must stop!

What in bloody hell does that have to do with atheists?  Beats the shit out of me, but as I said above, it is an original thought.  Surely that’s worth a smile or two?

Atheists are what??

When it comes to liars for Jesus, there is none greater than Ray Comfort.  Take a look at his answer to the FFRF’s billboards, a billboard promoting his new non-interactive anti-atheist site:

Billboard 1

Trina Hooks, the Atheist Examiner, has already slapped that site around here, here and here,  including Comfort’s new(ish) lie about what atheists are (emphasis mine):

Let’s start with the obvious… An atheist is someone who does not believe the existence of deities.

The atheists I know aren’t addle-minded enough to suppose that nothing “made” something. But for Comfort, the use of this type of language sets the stage for his creation (or intelligent design) agenda. It is irrelevant to him [Ray Comfort] whether what he is saying is true. But what better way to introduce his house builder analogy, which, if he told the truth about what atheists think, would prove to be a non sequitur.

Truer words have never been spoken. Ray Comfort really does not care if what he says is true.  As long as it fits his agenda he’ll say it.

Teacher suspended after accusation of atheism

I’ve been in a rotten mood the last few days and reading this post over at PZ Myer’s has not changed my disposition.  It appears that a teacher by the name of Richard Mullens of Brookeland, Texas was suspended after a parent accused him of being an atheist.

On January 15th, there was a board meeting. Nothing was on the agenda concerning me. During the open forum, several audience members spoke to their concerns that I was an atheist and I was too liberal. On January 16th, I was called to Mr. Richard Turner’s office (my principal), and he informed me that I had been put on administrative leave with pay. The reasons, as stated to me by Mr. Turner at the time, were that I was accused of being an atheist and teaching atheism in the classroom, and I was too liberal.

To top matters off, the school board didn’t even inform Mullens of any complaints nor did they offer him a chance to respond to the allegations.  The parents showed up, made a complaint and he was suspended the next day (from a write up in the the Beaumont Enterprise):

Board members took no official action that evening, but Mullens was placed on administrative leave the next day pending an investigation, he said.

According to a letter dated Jan. 28 originally faxed to Brookeland ISD and later faxed to The Enterprise by Mullens, the school district at no time informed Mullens of specific allegations or requested a statement from him in response to allegations.

The article also makes note that there hadn’t been any complaints prior to these parents showing up at the board meeting.  It also quotes a student at the school as stating that certain people in the community were upset that Mullens openly supported Obama.

Nicole Ard, a senior at the high school, has been a student of Mullens’ for five years. Ard, who is senior class president, said discussion often got heated, “but they were just debates.”

“Mostly people were upset because he supported Barack Obama, whereas a lot of people in Brookeland were against (Obama),” said Ard, 18.

So, it’s quite possible I suppose that his suspected atheism was merely a convenient excuse as it’s a bit more socially acceptable to attack atheists than to fire someone for not being a racist.

Either way, the situation sucks all around.

You can’t rebel against what you don’t believe exists!

ex_atheist

What is it with Christians running around saying they used to be atheists because they ran around being, at the very least, stupid assholes for a while?

Take the makers of this silly assed shirt shown to the left. It’s being marketed towards Christians who “would not have said God did not exist”.

Many of us would not have said that God did not exist, but we lived as though God did not exist. We lived as though there would be no
consequences for our sins. We did whatever pleased us.  Thank God though, today we are officially ex-athiests.

In other words, they weren’t atheists.  They were theists, Christians specifically, who were having themselves a tantrum and refusing to obey their main parent God.

There’s also the whole part about atheists being people who live “as though there [will] be no consequences” and who do “whatever please[s] us”.

I don’t even know what to say to that kind of hate and bigotry anymore.  Besides “fuck you you damned twit” that is.  How about you?
