by Karen on February 13, 2009

The Atheist Bus Campaign has arrived in the United States courtesy of the FFRF.  There are six bus ads in all, but here are my two favourites (click to enlarge):

Billey Joe Johnson: Suicide or Murder?

by Karen on February 7, 2009

billey_joe

I found this story about a suspicious death of a young black man over at Womanist Musings  and thought I’d share it.

I encourage you to sign the link below & post this on your own blog if you have one (Colour of Change will send a copy to your email address if you sign the petition).

Here’s the story:

On December 8th, 17-year-old Billey Joe Johnson died from a gunshot  wound to the head. Police say he killed himself with a shotgun after being stopped for a simple traffic violation in Lucedale, Mississippi[1]

Several things seem to cast doubt on the official story, including an independent investigation that concluded it would  have been impossible for the shot that killed Johnson to have been self-inflicted.

Send George Your Shoes

by Karen on December 16, 2008

The Rude Pundit has come up with an excellent idea in honour of Muntader al-Zaid, the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George Bush.

Send George a pair of your shoes:

This morning, the Rude Pundit decided to honor the efforts of Muntader al-Zaidi, the Iraqi shoe-tosser, by taking out a raggedy old pair of sneakers, putting them in a Priority Mail shipping box, helpfully provided by the United States Post Office, and shipping them to President George W. Bush at the White House. He included a note that read, “This is a farewell kiss from the American people, you dog.”

Since throwing objects at the president is generally considered a crime, the Rude Pundit figures sending shoes to Bush is a small, good thing, a gesture of contempt that has context. Sweet Christ, at this point, there should be giant sacks of shoes heading to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC, 20500, like letters to Santa.

It’s still in the 30s here so I am not going outside unless I utterly have to, but tomorrow it’s supposed to be north of 60 & near 80 by the end of the week. I will be sending a pair of my shoes sometime between now and Friday. How about you?

ETA: If you have a lot of flip flops as I do, they are perfect for putting in the flat rate Priority envelopes which cost $4.80 to send.  They have flat rate boxes ($9.80) in multiple sizes, the smallest of which just happens to be advertised by the USPS as being perfect for sending shoes.

Boycott the Mormons

November 7, 2008

While much ado is being made about the overwhelming support of prop 8 by black voters in California, there is little ado being made about getting even with the Mormons (aka: that huge group of white people who donated $20 million to passing Prop 8 ) for seeing to it that gay Californians lost their [...]

Why [some] atheists care about religion

October 28, 2008

I found the following video a couple of weeks ago and have been meaning to put it up.  It’s a ’5 minute Reader’s Digest version’ of why some of us atheists care about religion. The fact of the matter is that ‘religion’ isn’t a private matter between the religious adherent and the object of their [...]

Another reason to hate PETA

June 12, 2008

Shown to the left is a photo of a “protest” by PETA. The woman by the police officers is Ashely Bryne, a coordinator for PETA. The officers are inquiring about the well-being of the two shrunk-wrapped women due to the hot weather that day. Upon inquiry, Shawn Herbold (on the bottom) stated that she was [...]
