Impending matriarchy?
If we do not live in a society that thinks men are superior to women why is that articles such as this one in Reason keep showing up day after day, month after month, year after year? The theme is always the same:
Women are obtaining college degrees at a rate higher than men and this trend is expected to continue well into the future. At some point in this future our children will live under the velvet fist of the matriarchy.
It’s just so over the top it’s almost unbelievable, especially since the author of this piece admits that women will never “rule” men:
No, men are not about to disappear into underclass status. They will not become mothers anytime soon, and they will not stop secreting testosterone. Men’s ambition will ensure ample male representation at the very top of the social order, where CEOs, senators, Nobelists, and software wunderkinds dwell. Women will not rule men.
There’s only one of two ways this could possibly be true. There is no impending matriarchy or someone thinks that the matriarchy - a system of rule by women for women - is going to actually teach it’s daughters (future women, thus born leaders) they are inherently weak and must submit to male dominance.
The only way the second way could be true is if gender essentialism is true. Gender essentialism states that gender roles are determined biologically and not subject to social adaptations.
Even if it were true and I personally doubt that it is, a century or two of matriarchal rule would fix that defect as such a society would at some point start seeing value in assertive, dominant women and thus effectively breed out reserved, submissive women.
They’d still be around much in the same manner reserved submissive men are still around, but the femaleness standard would be the assertive woman as the assertive man is the standard for maleness now.
Of course, there’s the whole idea that a matriarchy would be a benign mistress as “matri” means mother in Greek. This view posits that the matriarchy would be a family centered system of rule largely for this reason alone.
Ridiculous.
One might as put forth the idea that the patriarchy is a gentle master because “patri” means father in Greek. Daddy might be a kind, loving and gentle master, but at the end of the day - he’s still the master.
In a matriarchy - mommy will be the master - end of discussion.
