Listening to these people speak reminds me of the things I’ve heard or read about Jews, we atheists, feminist women and people of colour over the years.
I don’t know how the guy managed to record any of this without getting visibly pissed off.
I would’ve had to leave by the time I got to the woman that implied there’s a secret interpretation of Arabic that’s hidden from us non-Arabic speakers.
It is a common Islamic fundamentalist claim that any non-Arabic version of the Qur’an does not carry the meaning of the text.
The authority for that seems to rest on Qur’an 43:2–3: “By the Scripture which maketh plain, / Lo! We have appointed it a Lecture [Qur'an], in Arabic that haply ye may understand.” (Of course, if the fundamentalists are right, we can’t possibly understand the true meaning of that verse in English.)
So that woman’s utterance seems to have one of its roots in that verse of the Qur’an: that the original Arabic Qur’an is the one that can be understood, and by implication, that non-Arabic versions can’t be understood properly.
The video shows a lot of ignorant people parrotting lines someone has fed to them and clearly unable to substantiate why they believe them to be true.
But let’s not imagine that all of those lines are wholly invented by enemies of Islam. The nonsense in Islam provides plenty of unsubstantiated dogma, and it’s hardly surprising that much of it echoes back and forth in the absence of critical inquiry.
