Good News: The Obamas. Bad News: Those Damned Initiatives

You’ve probably heard the good news.  Michelle Obama will be our next First Lady and those precious little girls, Malia and Sasha, will be the First Kids come January.  Barrack Obama, of course, will be the 44th President of the United States.

Just look at ‘em.  Aren’t they adorable?

The bad news is the initiatives. While South Dakota and Colorado defeated their respective attacks on abortion rights, all states with anti-gay initiatives on the ballots passed them, including, as of this morning, California that went to Obama .

And it’s not like the liberals didn’t show up to vote on the props because California also had a prop on the ballot seeking to restrict abortion rights which appears to be on it’s way to defeat.

I’m so disappointed with California. How can a state vote to remove the equality of it’s own people?

I know! I live in Arkansas and I was SO disappointed in the 57% that voted for this measure. (I did vote and I voted against it.) I think the good news, if there be any, is that the gap is closing a bit in these kinds of measures. I can’t remember the exact numbers, but I am pretty sure that the vote to define marriage as between a man and a woman was even more resoundly passed. I think people heard the word “homosexual” and shut out any other thought. My only consolation is that through my own blog posts, I had one person tell me that she changed her mind on her vote. That is what it takes: one person at a time.

I am sad about those initiatives today. America is just not ready yet for that level of rights, I guess, but things ARE slowly improving. Doesn’t make any sense to me , and it frustrates me very much because it is so wrong, but I am trying to stay positive.

Here in Florida, the poorly worded and particularly mean spirited “Defense of Marriage” amendment passed with 62+% of the vote. For me, that tarnished an otherwise great election.

Since Florida constitutional amendments need 60% of the vote to be approved, it will take a long time before my state is civilized enough to restore sanity.
