Back in the early '60s when I was a toddler, my parents' favorite babysitter was a wonderful old Slovakian Christian woman who'd immigrated to the U.S. many years previously. She was the perfect babysitter in most respects, but she was most insistent about trying to break me of being left-handed. She and my Mother had a serious row about it, and I almost lost my best baby-sitter. Finally she gave in. But her major concern, and the reason why she was so insistent, was that she believed it was inviting evil to be left-handed.
