heh, if 90 day Jane can wait a bit longer, she just may experience a great depression after all! At any rate, I don't see anything wrong with being self centered.

Miss Jane can still be atheist while finding no meaning in her little universe. She's just bored. She may or may not be a True Atheist, whatever that is, and really, who cares? She may be doing this as a stunt, or as a way to contact as many people as possible hoping one will come up with a good reason for her not to carry out her threat. It is not a hard and fast rule, but most of the time when someone says they are going to kill themselves, it is a way to draw attention to their plight. She indicated that her life has been lived out online, so what other venue would she use?

alright, i'll go.
Listen, an atheist wants to kill themselves because life has no meaning? That tells me Jane is NOT an atheist. Speaking from personal experience, I did not start living till i gave up trying to convince myself to believe and embracing NOT BELIEVING.(the caps are only for emphasis). It is the common religious caricacure of atheism that there is no purpose in life and yet when asked about their purpose in life the religious will give you a version of "My goal in life is to please god so that i get my final reward in heaven". Yes, you read right.

The religious person's meaning of life and reason to live is to DIE to get into heaven. Well pardon the rational followup question, but if indeed your goal in life is to please god then die and get into paradise, wouldn't it make sense to get into paradise sooner than later? So why then do the religious mourn the dead, shouldn't they envy them? So you ask about the atheists' view point. Good question. My goal in life is to contribute to humanity using my particular capabilities, like humans before me have, knowing that without the curiosities and diligence of newton and einstein and watson and crick and their colleagues, I would be past midlife in my late twenties.

Yes, without the contribution of science against all religious opposition, our species, including the religious variety may not be in existence today. That is what I know to be true. Everything else, including SPECULATIONS about gods and miracles and luck and magic have not yet shown themselves contributary to the welfare of our species and if anyone wishes to deny that, then give up all that science has brought so far inclusing medicine, give up that apple of life (knowledge and curiosity) and cling to ignorance and servitude. That sounds like the ultimate in meaning and purpose in life, doesn't it?
