Shuster apologizes for remark about Chelsea

Here’s something you don’t see everyday. David Shuster has actually apologized for what he said about Hillary and Chelsea Clinton. He did try the standard non-apology of “I apologize if you were offended by “whatever’” as have other racist/sexist talking heads when first confronted about it, but has since decided to apologize for giving offense:

He’s still suspended and I’m cynical enough to think that this real apology was only offered in response to Hillary’s threat to pull out of the upcoming debate,. However, he did do it and as far as I know, it’s a first when it comes to racist and sexist remarks on national media outlets so I figure it’s worth pointing out.

Of course, if you read the comments on the video at YouTube, some people are stating that he had nothing to apologize for as it was nothing special. These kind of remarks say a lot about American society and it’s not good.

A young woman was called a whore on national television and her mother was accused of being her pimp for doing the same thing that male politicians and their adult children have done.

What kind of society says these kind of remarks are “nothing special”?

For me, that would be a society so used to publicly castigating women, especially those who do not fit some pre-conceived idea of what women are supposed to be/do, that even particularly vicious attacks are considered to be just the way things are.

Is there really any cause to wonder why letters like this appear every now and then?
