James Dobson has been threatening to take his followers and leave the GOP for some time now just to turn around and support whoever the GOP decides is best for them. This election season he’s released various statements about how he will never support McCain, the heir apparent, and it appears that he’s serious as he’s seeking one million “value voters” who will pledge to stand by their principles, not the GOP:
Focus on the Family Founder and Chairman Dr. James Dobson invites values voters to pledge to uphold pro-family principles during this year’s election.
In response to the media’s efforts to minimize the impact of values voters, Dr. Dobson and Focus on the Family Action are initiating a nationwide Values Voter Pledge. The pledge is a statement by citizens who are committing to vote only for candidates who uphold the highest pro-life, pro-faith and pro-family principles.
Focus Action is hoping 1 million voters will take the pledge, which will serve as a demonstration of the strength and seriousness of Values Voters in this election.
“I want to show the media, the pundits and the candidates that values voters are serious about their civic responsibilities this year,” Dr. Dobson said.
The pledge states that the pledgee will not support any candidate that does not support making abortion and euthanasia a crime, the undermining of the rights and privileges of gay people as well as the continued assault on separation of church(es) and state.
Of course, the only GOP candidate that meets these requirements as written is none other than Mike Huckabee whom appears to have split the evangelical vote with McCain. This, of course, has led people to believe that a McCain/Huckabee ticket could be in the future for the GOP, which may be Dobson’s goal.

“…has led people to believe that a McCain/Huckabee ticket could be in the future for the GOP, which may be Dobson’s goal.”
I’ve wondered this myself. If so, then, the idea that he appears to be serious about taking one million voters with him is a bluff rather than a serious threat. Dobson is too egomaniacal to quit the Republican party. One million voters stranded all alone in a third party will not carry clout with anyone. Jimmy D. wants to be a big man, an evangelical, prophetic voice in the godless, secular wilderness of the USA. A third party won’t get him very far in that venture. Now that Falwell and Kennedy have died, and Oral Roberts and Pat Robertson are nearly ancient (Dobson, the youngster of the gang, is in his 70s), Dobson wants to take on a mantle as “the” American evangelical leader.
Time will tell. I hope McCain has more sense than to hitch himself to Huck.

James Dobson is encouraging one million Americans to not vote for McCain in the General Election? Am I missing something here? This makes no sense. Wouldn’t that directly help the Democrats win? What kind of Supreme Court Justices will Clinton or Obama nominate? I am all for making statements, but this is a steep price! What is the reward for a boycott. I remember when the Sunnis boycotted their election in Iraq. I thought that this was childish, and who in their right minds wouldn’t want to exercise the right to vote that men and women have died for. I also thought that this would never happen in the U.S. Apparently I was wrong.
