Mississippi to ban ‘fat’ people from eating in public
Pardon the expression, but this just takes the cake. A Mississippi representative has written a bill that, if passed, will forbid restaurants from serving people who are obese according to the state.
Any food establishment to which this section applies shall not be allowed to serve food to any person who is obese, based on criteria prescribed by the State Department of Health after consultation with the Mississippi Council on Obesity Prevention and Management established under Section 41-101-1 or its successor. The State Department of Health shall prepare written materials that describe and explain the criteria for determining whether a person is obese, and shall provide those materials to all food establishments to which this section applies. (H.B. 282)
This is not a joke nor an attempt to raise concerns - it’s serious. Need we any more proof that the obesity “crisis” is plain f’ing insane and has more to do with shaming people that don’t fit a particular body shape than anything else?

Well, this is the most evil thing liberals… wait Mississsippi? What the F#@k are they thinking? I was pretty sure conservatives only aimed for “family values”- when the hell did they adopt the nanny state plan?
I like the way you put it. Mississippi to ban fat people from eating IN PUBLIC. They’re still going to eat whatever we want in private. If you’re going to infringe on people’s civil liberties, at least do it reasonably. I mean, what if they just want to eat a salad?
I can’t imagine this has any chance of passing. Here in Mississippi, the economy is so fragile that I’d be surprised that the legislature would do anything that might hurt it further.
I am actually completely behind this. Do any of you even live in Mississippi? Obesity is a huge problem here, and while this seems extreme taken out of context, consider two things…
1) Its impossible to impact negative behavior through legislation without offending at least a minority of people.
2) This legislation really isn’t any different than public smoking bans. While second hand smoke kills, seeing obese people eat makes me want to kill myself.
Best,
Jose
Heather, I think Jose must be kidding. But in case he’s not:
First of all, the smoking bans are all garbage also. They infringe on the rights of business owners. There are too many problems with the smoking bans for it to be practical to talk about them all on a blog regarding a different topic.
But this new law regarding the obese is completely ridiculous. A fat person can’t be served? Why not? What if they just want a salad? And even then, we’re going to tell some people “You’re only allowed to eat salad” and then let other people go on with their own unhealthy habits (everyone has a few)?
Finally, however you feel about watching a fat person eat is irrelevant. You should eat at home because watching stupid people breathe makes me want to kill myself.

This is terrible and it takes the free will choice from people learning through trial and error. I believe this is unconstitutional. Mississippi will be the biggest loser.
