Why you should always keep it simple
Al Gore has come out in support of marriage equality and has uploaded a video about it which you can view here. Most of his statement was fine, but then he had to go and explain that disallowing gay people to enjoy the same rights and privileges as straight people was the same as promoting “promiscuity”.
I don’t understand why it is considered by some people to be a threat to heterosexual marriage to allow it for gays and lesbians. Shouldn’t we be promoting the kind of faithfulness and loyalty to one partner regardless of sexual orientation? Because if we don’t do that, then to that extent you are promoting promiscuity and promoting all the problems that can result from promiscuity.
Don’t get me wrong - I’m glad he’s behind treating gay people with dignity - but why in fuck did he have to insult other people? Calling people who aren’t married to each other “promiscuous” and implying they are unlikely to be faithful and loyal to each other because they aren’t legally entangled with each other is fucking ridiculous.
We can do better than this and we can start by ceasing to pretend that a couple of gold bands and a piece of paper magically makes people “faithful” “loyal” and whatever else to each other. They don’t and it’s not the duty of gay people to get us straight people to act like we meant it when we said “I do”. Furthermore, not saying “I do” does not make that couple any less committed to their relationship than we married people are committed to ours.
