Today is the 35th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade in which the US Supreme Court struck down various state laws that placed undue restrictions on abortion. It is also the third annual “Blog for Choice” by NARAL. The topic this year is explaining why “I” vote pro-choice so without further ado, here’s why I vote pro-choice:
- I firmly believe that each and every woman on the planet is the sole owner of herself and her life. No one owns her. She belongs neither to the state nor to the public and she does not have to seek permission from anyone to make decisions for herself.
- I firmly believe that every woman on the planet has an innate right to determine if and when she’ll have children and no one can make this decision for her. To do so would be to completely strip her of her standing as a human being.
I know – pretty short list, but it really is that simple for me. Reproductive freedom is a fundamental right, not a permission based privilege.

On a more depressing note, though, I was listening to the radio this morning in my car on the way to work. The news segment (in between sports talk radio (prattling on about the faith of Dungee (aaaargh!))) featured ‘moral crusaders heading to Washington to defend their faith on this anniversary of Roe v. Wade’s first legalization of abortion in America.’ This was not a quote from an activist, but the reporter.
I agree with your list. It’s short and to the point and nothing more should need to be said. It’s not a complicated issue.
