Will there be wailing and gnashing of teeth?
Huckabee won the Republican caucus last night with 34% of the vote, nearly 10% more than Mitt Romney and more than twice the percentage of the other contenders. A survey of Republicans as they entered showed that six in ten of them were born-again evangelical Christians. Nearly half of them favoured Huckabee and four in ten said it mattered that the candidate share their religious beliefs.
After nearly forty years of the elite Republican leaders courting this “important” group, it’s about time it all came home to roost. With Huckabee’s campaign being firmly rooted around him actually being an evangelical Christian, I wonder if we’ll see attacks on him for that in the coming months. That would be priceless, don’t you think?
