Would you jump in front of a gun?

A seven year old girl named Alexis Groggins did. She was trying to protect her mother. The shooter put six bullet holes in her little body.

A 7-year-old-girl is being hailed as an “angel from heaven” and a hero for jumping in front of an enraged gunman, who pumped six bullets into the child as she used her body as a shield to save her mother’s life.

Alexis Goggins, a first-grader at Campbell Elementary School, is in stable condition at Children’s Hospital in Detroit recovering from gunshot wounds to the eye, left temple, chin, cheek, chest and right arm.

“She is an angel from heaven,” said Aisha Ford, a family friend for 15 years who also was caught up in the evening of terror.

The girl’s mother, Selietha Parker, 30, was shot in the left side of her head and her bicep by a former boyfriend, who police said was trying to kill Parker. The gunman was disarmed by police and arrested at the scene of the shooting, a Detroit gas station. Police identified him as Calvin Tillie, 29, a four-time convicted felon whom Parker had dated for six months.

You’d think this would be the kind of story the media would be all over.   Most of us adults would probably hesitate, especially after bullets started flying.  Alexis didn’t.  She jumped out of her seat and put herself between him and her mom.

What makes this even more sad and somewhat disgusting is the fact that her mother, Selietha, had called the police – twice. She was hung up on once and told there were no available units the second time.   It was only after a gas station employee called and shots were fired that the police showed up.

It’s so fucking frustrating, but it’s also just the way things are.   Just a few months ago we had a young black man staying with us for a while.   He was jumped outside on his way back from his girlfriend’s place.   A shot was fired.  It grazed the side of his head right above his left eye.

The cops and the ambulance showed up about an hour or so later.  They don’t have enough manpower to be on the ball as they all like to say.  The thing about that is, as a stay at home mom I see cops everyday.  There’s usually no less than two cop cars in this neighbourhood. They love parking their cruisers side by side, making it impossible to get around ‘em – when they’re not guarding that damn stop sign we all roll through because there is no traffic during the day.

It’s enough to make you want to scream your bloody head off.
