A two month old infant is in the hospital today with burns on her face and hand. She got those burns from the microwave her father put her in. He originally stated that she was burned when he tripped and spilled hot water on her. Then he confessed and said he put her in the microwave and turned it on because he was “stressed”.
Since that time his wife, the mother of the tortured child, has declared the whole incident is the result of the devil taking advantage of her husband.
“That was not my husband; my husband is a wonderful father. Satan was working through his weaknesses,†said Eva Marie Mauldin, the 20-year-old mother of the 2-month old who was severely burned after her father placed her in a hotel room microwave in Galveston two weeks ago.
In an exclusive interview with 11 News, Eva Mauldin said her husband Joshua is “not the monster people are making him out to be.â€
She blames the devil and some form of a demonic possession of her husband for what happened.

In truth it does seem that Joseph Maudlin has a history of being mentally disturbed with undisclosed classmates stating he would head butt brick walls.
High school classmates remember Mauldin’s odd behavior. He would head butt brick walls
“He was always the type who would do things just to where he would have to stay home from school,†said former classmate Bryan Bunch. “He always was the loner, the guy who stood over there by himselfâ€

A part of me can’t help but feel a bit of sympathy for him should it turn out he’s actually suffering from a mental illness. The religions of the world are steeped not only in the idea that there are supernatural beings, but in the idea that people can be possessed by them.
The Bible has Jesus routinely dealing with demonic possession such as the story about the casting of the demons into the pigs who committed suicide in protest, the possessed daughter of the Canaanite woman and the man made blind and mute by demons. It also has Jesus evicting such beings from Mary Magdalene and having to deal with being accused of being possessed himself.
These are not long forgotten beliefs only remembered because they’re in the Bible. Catholic priests preform ‘exorcisms‘ of these creatures to this day as do leaders in other Christian sects. Certain sects of Judaism are thought to believe in possession also. There’s a tradition of possession in Islam as well.
In fact, many sects of Christianity continue to believe that while the devil or it’s underlings (for lack of a better word) do not physically possess people, we can be put under the influence of these creatures via various things such as popular fiction, fashion entertainment, etc.
It’s just a sad situation all around. But, what makes it worse perhaps is that that baby isn’t is the last victim and her father ain’t going to be the last victim of “possession”. There will be more.

So, no accountability for his actions, and he probably won’t get the help he needs. Damn.
Believing in demonic possession always takes a leap of faith, and while I respect those who believe in it, I’m not buying it in this case.
The AP has a good video on the case:
