On the heels of Al Sharpton’s prediction that “those that really believe in God” will defeat Mitt Romney, comes this from Bill “the Dr. Phil of Prayer” Keller of LivePrayer (emphasis added):
If you vote for Mitt Romney, you are voting for satan! This message today is not about Mitt Romney. Romney is an unashamed and proud member of the Mormon cult founded by a murdering polygamist pedophile named Joseph Smith nearly 200 years ago. The teachings of the Mormon cult are doctrinally and theologically in complete opposition to the Absolute Truth of God’s Word. There is no common ground. If Mormonism is true, then the Christian faith is a complete lie. There has never been any question from the moment Smith’s cult began that it was a work of satan and those who follow their false teachings will die and spend eternity in hell. This message is about the top Christian leaders in our nation who are supporting this cult members quest to become the next President of the United States.

The only thing that surprises me about Sharpton’s announcement and Keller’s rant is that anyone is surprised by it.  Evangelicals, especially the dominionists/fundamentalists, have attacked groups such as the Mormons as being “cults” for years.  The Southern Baptists are especially hostile towards religious minorities such as the Mormons.

I’ve always thought it interesting that Mormons are such anathema to evangelical Christians – why don’t they get hot and bothered about the atheists?
It seems to me that there are a couple things here. First off, the LDs church is ridiculously well-organized, posing a threat to the established mainstream Protestant churches. Add to that the fact that Mormons are in zealous pursuit of more converts, and you have a major enemy of the mainstream Christian churches.
Of course there’s another thing going on here: the Mormons hit close to home. Mormonism holds a lot in common with evangelical Christianity, making it all the more important that evangelical Christians try to diss the Mormons to make sure that the few differences are known.
Comparing an atheist to an evangelical Christian is like comparing apples and oranges for them; comparing evangelical Christians to Mormons is like comparing oranges to grapefruit.
Hmm. I hadn’t considered how the aggressiveness of Mormons and other such groups could play into it the hostility. Both the Mormons and the JWs are active in my neighbourhood which is surrounded by Protestant churches, two of which routinely put up hostile signs out front. The more I think about it, the more it seems like a turf war amongst gangs with the weapons of choice being words.
Bill Keller is one of the biggest liars around. Check out my website and see for yourself.
