It seems that "believers" or the "faithful" think themselves to be on a higher plane than an athiest like me and you. I have freely told anyone who wants to know, or who brings up religion as a subject of conversation, that I am an athiest. I find that I'm sometimes met with a refreshing, "Me too!" It's up to them whether they want to be friendly or not. If people judge me negatively because of MY beliefs, then f them. Oh, and I believe the word "secular" means to not practice a religion. One can be secular and still believe in a god as the article does seem to suggest.

I admire your courage to write and speak about this subject. I am a hispanic atheist (credit for this goes to eight years of catholic school and that I actually read the bible) in the southwest and it is a truly difficult way to live. My children know my feelings but very few people other than that. The smugness of the religious right here is very strong. I long for the day when I can voice my position on religion without being looked on as a person to be avoided or scolded.

My fantasy is to have the bible placed in the fiction section of all bookstores haha.
