Married women can’t be raped

by Karen on March 29, 2007

in Feminism

Phyllis Schlafly, a longtime enemy of the ERA, gave a speech last night at Bates College titled “Conservatism vs. Feminism: The Great Debate”.  In addition to stating that feminism is “incompatible” with marriage and motherhood, she also stated that married women cannot be sexually assaulted.

Why? Because by getting married the woman gives up her rights to her own body. She becomes the property of her husband and he is entitled to sex regardless of her wishes.  I guess when you think that little of women, feminism is incompatible with marriage.

This event was sponsored by the Republican student group.  I wonder what their mothers would think about them sponsoring a person who thinks their fathers have a right to force them to have sex against their will simply because they said “I do”.

Patrick Craig’s Accusations

March 27, 2007

Patrick Craig of The Passionate Atheist was not banned for disagreeing with me. Patrick Craig was banned because his comments were from the get go insulting and abusive with no real disagreement in them, unless one counts “you’re an idiot and that makes you wrong because I said so” as “disagreement”.
His comments [...]

Still around, just a bit preoccupied

March 26, 2007

Just a quick post to let you all know that I am around, just preoccupied. The short explanation:
I picked up something on my computer late last week that sent my anti-virus software into air-raid mode when windows wasn’t throwing up crash errors and shutting itself down. I finally got that straightened out [...]

Sam Harris: Speaking Truth to Power

March 22, 2007

Sam Harris has done it again. In a recent article titled Gods Dupes he writes that when one holds that a certain subject (in this case, religion) is to be respected, one cannot help but inadvertently give cover to those who are further down the line than oneself.
All we have to do to [...]

Harris vs. Sullivan - Round Two

March 21, 2007

Sam Harris, author of the End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation, has been in a debate with Andrew Sullivan, author of Conservative Soul, regarding religion. While Sullivan landed a few well-places shots against Harris early on, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to state Harris had him on the [...]
