Telling it like it is

This letter was written to the New Zealand Herald in protest to the labeling of New Zealand as a “Christian Nation”.

If my resistance to deem New Zealand to be a Christian nation makes me a traitor, as Brian Tamaki suggests, take me to the Tower, or the New Zealand equivalent, for it would be greatly preferable to living in such a country.

You might think, then, that I am one of the 48.8 per cent of non-Christian New Zealanders.

I am not. I am an Anglican priest serving an Auckland church. And no, I’m not Bishop Richard Randerson under a nom de plume.

As an immigrant from America I know what it means to live in a Christian nation. That’s why I left. New Zealand’s respect for human rights is why I chose to live here as a permanent resident.

Before Christians hasten to denounce my position, take a close look at the only Christian nation. To be fair it should be described as a Fundamentalist Christian nation.

And, aye, they should. America is a “Christian Nation” in the sense that is presently controlled by fundamentalist Christians who have declared war on all things ’secular’, which is to say ‘anything that doesn’t jive with their version of The Truth ™ ‘.

Then you’ve got the whole End of Days theology that includes a sizable chunk of the population. Twenty five percent of Americans believe that Jesus will return this year. A full fourty four percent of Americans believe Jesus will return during their lifetime.

All this adds up to a sizable chunk of the American population being almost incapable of rational behaviour on many subjects. We can’t extend all rights and privilges to homosexuals because the Bible says they’re abominations. We can’t explicitly support the complete equality of women because the Bible says men were given rulership over us. The destruction of enviroment is unimportant because we’re all going to Heaven or Hell quite literally sometime in the next century, at most.

Disease, war and famine are merely sad things that cannot be stopped because all are required to not only be present, but to increase as such an increases will be one of the heralds that Jesus is soon to arrive.

And one thing that is often overlooked is The War. It is not a regional flare-up, it’s a major attack on Israel by a coalition of Islamic countries with the tacit support of Russia and little more than mild rebukes by European countries and neutral Islamic countries. Warfare will enventually spread throughout the world and by the time it’s over many will be dead. Then we get the Anti-christ, who will establish peace throughout the world* and then Armageddon, the war to end all wars.

This is what a good chunk of the American populace believes. Now tell me, how can anyone who expects a war on such a scale, even looks forward to it and considers it neccessary, who refers to the establishment of worldwide peace as the worst thing one can imagine that will be put to an end by their master, be remotely reasonable when it comes to international politics and peace? Simply put, they can’t.

Yep, the New Zealanders and the rest of the world does need to pay attention to United States of Jesus. The madmen have taken over the asylum and they are armed to the teeth.

* As an aside, guess why there’s such peace? All true believers will have vacated the premises. Armageddon doesn’t start until there are (once again) true believers on the planet.
