Military Chaplain: No Atheists in Foxholes

Another military chaplain takes a swing at atheists:

[link]A former infantry officer who went to a Southern Baptist seminary, Hash said there is no conflict between ministry and combat. Soldiers have a job to do and “we’re there to walk alongside those soldiers as they face some of the challenges and turmoil of life,” he said.

Chaplains don’t seek converts but they rarely see a committed atheist during combat, Hash said.

“It’s interesting how people, even though they say they’re atheists, are drawn to some type of faith when they have to face stressful and difficult situations like war will bring,” he [Col. Pat Hash] said.

It’s also interesting how it would be considered an insult to imply that people who are theists are such merely because they can’t handle stressful situations without some sky-daddy there to hold their itty-bitty hands throughout it.

It’s also interesting how if Col. Hash had said something like that about any other religious minority – he would be reemed from all sides.

It’s also interesting how he directly implies that faith is for the irrational because if there’s one thing we atheists are known for is a penchant for being mind-numbingly rational. We rely on ‘human reasoning’ and ‘earthly knowledge’ and all those things that are routinely slammed by typical theists.

Yet, according to the Colonel – let us get extremely stressed out and all that earthly grounding flees us. We turn to the unsupportable belief that we are not merely mortal beings who will die, but immortal ‘souls’ that will survive death despite no evidence that such a proposition is true. We’ll cling to “faith” instead of “reason”.

And, of course, most interesting is that Col. Hash and theists throughout the world probably think we atheists are the ones who came up with the idea that faith is irrational.
