This is a question that has been on my mind lately as there seems to be an influx of articles, speeches and such calling for peace between the various religious factions. Something’s missing though and I think it’s my question above.
As it stands -many sects with each religion contradict each other (ie, Protestant and Catholic). A big contradiction between all three is the status of Jesus.
Some Jews may conceed that Jesus was a prophet, but was not the Messiah and definitely not God. Christians, of course, believe he was the Messiah and many believe him to have been God. Muslims generally conceed he was a prophet but, like the Jews, reject him as God.
All three of these religions claim to be The Truth(c) and that their respective god is the One True God(tm). The sects of each generally claim to the only correct interpretation. All have fought wars against co-religionists, the adherants of their cousin religions and the adherants of other religions.
How can these three alone declare or establish peace amongst themselves, much less with the rest of the world? It seems to me that this is impossible unless all three agree that they are not in possession of The Truth(c), their god is not the One True God(tm) and their respective versions of this god are not the only correct versions.
I don’t see this happening anytime soon.
And so they ‘tolerate’ one another. But, what good is tolerance? Being from the south (US), tolerance means putting up with something you know to be wrong. Much like the treaty between Luther and the Catholics so long ago – tolerance is just a non-military way of saying ‘ceasefire’.
It means “we’ll quit killing you – for now. But, if you get all uppity about things – we’ll get back to it quite quickly.”
Your thoughts on the subject? Can religions be peaceful?
