“Unwanted Pregnancies Rice for Poor Women”
The National Center for Health Statistics and other sources led researchers to conclude that between 1994 and 2001 the rate of unplanned pregnancies increased by almost 30 percent for women below the poverty line while the rate for women above the line fell by 20 percent during the same time frame. The abortion rate also increased for those women. the authors noted that some state and federal reproductive health programs have been cut or made more restrictive in recent years. State and federal programs have increasingly focused on abstinence rather than contraception, and some analysts have argued that the shift is leading to less use of contraceptives and more unintended pregnancies. When asked about what they thought was behind the trends:
the authors noted that some state and federal reproductive health programs have been cut or made more restrictive in recent years. State and federal programs have increasingly focused on abstinence rather than contraception, and some analysts have argued that the shift is leading to less use of contraceptives and more unintended pregnancies.
Leslee Unruh, president and founder of the Abstinence Clearinghouse said the trends are due to the condescending manner in which programs for poor women are taught and shows that traditional sex education programs are failing.
Bullshit. Traditional programs are failing because people like Unruh are doing their best to destroy them. They’re using their growing political power to strip funding from legitimate programs and getting those funds (in some instances) diverted to their coffers. Here in Texas 25 million has been stripped from the family planning funds and five million has been promised to our own brand of Crisis Pregnancy Centers.
